Promise of the Father Pt 2 – Praying in the Holy Spirit
Some necessary steps to a victorious life:
- Ask for forgiveness from and receive Jesus into your heart.
- Be water baptized publicly declaring your faith in Jesus Christ.
- Be *filled with* and *pray in* the Holy Spirit as often as possible.
- Spend time in the Word every day.
- Keep yourself accountable being planted in the community of believers.
Today we are gong to focus on being filled with and praying in the Holy Spirit.
Last week we started on the Promise of the Father…
1. Go wait in Jerusalem for the Promise.
Luke 24:49 (NKJV) Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
1.1. The first disciples needed to wait for power from on high.
1.2. Before the Church can go out with any measure of success in accomplishing the great commission we need to be a church filled with power from on high.
Acts 2:4 (NKJV) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
1.3. Ela… my waiting period in Teen Challenge days. I read this. I heard this. And I wanted this. I would get up early and ask God to fill me. Day after day.
2. Jesus needed the filling with the Holy Spirit.
John 1:33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’
Matt 3:16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
2.1. The man Jesus needed the filling with Power from on High. 2.2. The one on whom the Spirit descends.
2.3. Descends and remains.
2.4. The Spirit rested and remained upon Jesus.
2.5. Rested: to come from one place to another, make one’s appearance,
John 3:34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.
3.1. Jesus rested the temptation of Satan By the Power of the Holy Spirit. 3.2. I would think Jesus prayed in the Holy Spirit.
3.3. Jesus operated in all the gifts of the Holy Spirit by the power of the Holy Spirit.
3.4. For the first 30 years there was peace, quiet, preparation, and no miracles or preaching.
3.5. Then Jesus was filled and every thing changed.
4. Build yourselves up in the Holy Spirt.
Jude 1:20-21 (NKJV) 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
4.1. This is how one builds themselves up.
4.2. Praying in our heavenly prayer language.
4.3. This is how a person stays encouraged.
4.4. Ela… listening to Tony Robbins is only going to get you so far.
5. The Holy Spirit helps us in our weaknesses.
Romans 8:26 (NKJV) Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
5.1. We do not know… but the Holy Spirit knows…
5.2. We do not have the desire… but the Holy Spirit makes it happen for us…
5.3. When words are just not enough…
6. I want all of you to speak in tongues.
1 Cor. 14:5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, …
… but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.
6.1. Why would Paul say this…
6.2. (1 Cor. 14:34 the women should keep silent)
6.3. I speak in tongues more than you all.
1 Corinthians 14:18-19 (NKJV) 18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;
19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
6.4. Because he who speaks in a tongue edifies himself.
1 Corinthians 14:4 (NKJV) He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
