The Great Co-Mission with Christ – A Discipleship Message

James Weidner III   -

Mark 16:14-20 (ESV) 14 Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. 15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” 19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.

Introduction:

  • Fall is soon upon us.
  • The time of year we revisit schedules.
  • A good time of year to reprioritize and restart pursuing goals if summer throw you off.
  • Today we are digging into fulfilling the Great Commission.

1. Go into all the world.

Matthew 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

1.1. We have to push ourselves into going and to keep going and not grow comfortable. .

1.1.1. We have to put ourselves in uncomfortable situations to grow. 1.1.2. Declarers of His praise
1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

1.2.The instruction was to go make disciples in turn becoming disciples.

1.2.1. Students of a new and living way.
1.2.2. Followers of the Way. – not a any way but The Way.
1.2.3. A people devoted to the Apostles teachings.
1.2.4. The instruction was not go into all the world and build your Churches.
1.3. A devoted follower is called a Disciple of Christ.

1.3.1.  Discipleship continues.

1.3.2.  I want to be Discipled.

1.3.3.  I want to disciple others.

1.4. Once we become members of the body then we make the decision to become disciples.

1.4.1. Can a person be saved and yet not a disciple…?
1.4.2. Theologically discipleship and salvation happen simultaneously.

1.4.3. But so does sanctification and salvation, though we know that sanctification continues.

1.5. Discipleship is a choice.

The Holy Spirit cloths us with power that we may accomplish The Great Commission!

Luke 3:16 John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

2.1. Jesus Fills Us With The Holy Spirit
2.2. Filled: to make replete, that is, (literally) to cram in, level up (that that was hollow), or (figuratively) to furnish, satisfy, execute (an office), to supply…… with the Spirit; 2.3. We are transformed!

3. That We Might Win More

1 Corinthians 9:15-18 (NKJV) 16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, I have been entrusted with a stewardship. 18 What is my reward then? That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ without charge, that I may not abuse my authority in the gospel. 19 For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more;

3.1. He desires that all will be saved.

Matthew 18:14 (ESV) So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

1 Tim 2:4 who desires all people to be saved

2 Peter 3:9 (ESV) The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

3.1.1. We have to know and trust that the heart of the Father is to save.

3.1.2. This is an eventual struggle for each person…

3.1.2.1. Pre-salvation: why did God allow Eve to eat of the fruit. Questioning and accusing God of not being just.

3.1.2.2. New salvation: we are thankful to be part of the family.

3.1.2.3. Mid-salvation: we learn of and begin to work through our understanding of predestination and free will.

3.2. if we do not preach the Gospel.

1 Corinthians 9:17 For if I do this willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, I have been entrusted with a stewardship.

3.2.1. Woe if we do not preach.
3.2.1.1. It is not a good feeling to ignore our call to duty.

3.2.2. If I do this on my own will “I have a reward”
3.2.2.1. Rewarded for preaching Christ.
3.2.2.2. For those who live their life preaching Christ can have an assurance of God’s provision for their life.

3.2.2.3. It is still a mindset of the people and Christians that somehow becoming a preacher means that you will be eating soup-rice and living in a shanty.

3.2.2.4. Instead double honor is due to the preacher of the Gospel.

3.2.3. But if against our will
3.2.3.1. We are still entrusted with a stewardship.

3.3. Servant to the Gospel. 3.3.1. Stretch yourself.

3.3.2. Eyes that see the needs.

4. The Great Co-Mission:

Mark 16:20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.

4.1. In partnership with Christ.

4.2. The power of the Holy Spirit transforms us into witnesses of the Kingdom of God.

Luke 24: 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.

4.3. Stay until you have been clothed.
4.4. The Great Co-Mission defined:

4.4.1. It is a Co-Mission

4.4.2. Partnership with Christ.

4.5.  To Go…

4.5.1. To saturate the world with the Gospel…

4.5.2. Lead people to a decision…
4.5.3. Lead people into obedience…
4.5.4. Begin to move in the power of the Holy Spirit

4.5.5. Go and make disciples.

4.5.6. We all need to be in discipleship spaces.

4.5.7. We are all learning to follow everything.

4.6.  Read the Word.

4.6.1. So much of health and fitness is diet.

4.6.2. So much of life is all about the intake.

4.6.3. You can get yourself into a real bad way by inputting to much of the wrong and not enough of the right.

4.6.4. Developing a hunger for the Word of God.

4.7.  Being planted in a local Church.

4.8.  Church life being a staple in your life.
